Mathematics software
Mathematics software supports learning, teaching and research by handling calculation, visualization and symbolic reasoning that would be tedious or impossible by hand. The programs range from simple educational tools for practising arithmetic and algebra to powerful systems used by scientists and engineers. What they share is the ability to express mathematical objects — numbers, equations, functions and shapes — in a form the computer can manipulate.
A central category is the computer algebra system (CAS), which works with symbols rather than just numbers. A CAS can simplify expressions, solve equations, differentiate and integrate, and manipulate matrices exactly, giving answers in closed form. Maxima is a well-known free example, alongside commercial systems. Complementary numerical tools instead compute approximate results for problems that have no neat symbolic solution, such as large systems of equations or simulations.
Graphing and plotting programs draw functions and data in two or three dimensions, helping users see the behaviour of curves and surfaces. Dynamic geometry software, such as GeoGebra, lets students construct figures and watch how they change as points are moved, making abstract relationships concrete. Statistics packages, spreadsheets and equation editors round out the field. Many of these tools are free or open-source and are used in classrooms to let learners experiment with mathematical ideas interactively.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a computer algebra system?
- It is software that manipulates mathematical expressions symbolically, solving equations and performing calculus exactly rather than only with numbers.
- What is dynamic geometry software?
- It lets users build geometric figures that update in real time as points are dragged, helping reveal how constructions and theorems behave.
- What is the difference between symbolic and numerical computation?
- Symbolic computation gives exact answers in terms of symbols, while numerical computation produces approximate decimal results, useful when no exact solution exists.
