Hex editing software

A hex editor is a program that displays and edits the raw bytes of a file directly, rather than interpreting them as text, an image or any particular document type. The contents are shown as hexadecimal numbers — the base-16 notation used to represent bytes compactly — usually alongside a column showing the printable characters those bytes correspond to. This gives complete, low-level control over a file's contents, byte by byte.

Working at this level is useful when the structure of a file matters more than its surface meaning. Programmers use hex editors to inspect binary file formats, examine program executables, and debug data that ordinary applications cannot open. In digital forensics and data recovery, viewing raw bytes can reveal hidden information, file signatures (the “magic numbers” that identify a format), or recoverable fragments of a damaged file. Hex editors are also used to patch binaries by changing specific bytes, for example to alter a program's behaviour or repair a corrupted header.

Typical features include searching for byte sequences or text strings, comparing two files to find differences, jumping to a numeric offset, and interpreting selected bytes as integers, dates or other data types. Some editors can open whole disks or memory as if they were files, and many highlight known structures to make a format easier to read. Because they expose data with no safety net, hex editors are powerful but require care, since a single wrong change can corrupt a file. A number of capable hex editors are available as freeware.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hex editor used for?
It lets users view and change the raw bytes of a file directly, which is useful for debugging binary formats, forensics, data recovery and patching programs.
Why is data shown in hexadecimal?
Hexadecimal represents each byte compactly as two digits, making the underlying binary data easier to read and edit than long strings of ones and zeros.
Is editing files with a hex editor risky?
Yes. Changes are applied directly to the bytes with no interpretation, so an incorrect edit can corrupt the file. Keeping a backup is advisable.
