The contents are shown as hexadecimal numbers — the base-16 notation used to represent bytes compactly — usually alongside a column showing the printable characters those bytes correspond to. This gives complete, low-level control over a file's contents, byte by byte.

Working at this level is useful when the structure of a file matters more than its surface meaning. Programmers use hex editors to inspect binary file formats, examine program executables, and debug data that ordinary applications cannot open.
