Computer security tools
Computer security tools protect a system and its data from unauthorised access, malicious software and accidental loss. No single program addresses every threat, so security is built from several layers that each guard against a different kind of risk. Together they aim to keep a computer trustworthy: preventing intruders from getting in, stopping harmful programs from running, and making it possible to recover when something goes wrong.
A firewall controls the flow of network traffic in and out of a computer. It inspects connections against a set of rules and blocks those that are not permitted, which prevents unwanted programs on the internet from reaching services on the machine and can stop software on the computer from sending data out without permission. A firewall does not detect malicious files directly; rather, it limits how the computer can be reached, reducing the opportunities an attacker has.
Other tools tackle malicious or unwanted software already present. Anti-spyware and related scanners look for programs that secretly gather information or change settings, sometimes described as snoopware, and remove them. Recovery tools address the aftermath of failures and mistakes, helping restore deleted files, repair damaged disks or roll a system back to a working state. Used together with regular backups and careful habits, these utilities form a practical defence for an ordinary computer, and many capable examples are available as freeware.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a firewall do?
- It controls network traffic to and from a computer, allowing permitted connections and blocking others, which limits how the machine can be reached over a network.
- Does a firewall remove viruses?
- No. A firewall controls connections but does not scan files. Detecting and removing malicious software is the job of antivirus and anti-spyware tools.
- What are recovery tools for?
- They help undo damage after a failure or mistake, for example by restoring deleted files, repairing a disk or returning the system to an earlier working state.
