Hard disk tools
Hard disk tools manage, maintain and repair the storage drives that hold a computer's data, including traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs). Because the drive holds the operating system and all files, keeping it healthy and correctly organised is essential, and a range of utilities exists to handle partitioning, copying, health checking and recovery.
Partitioning tools divide a drive into separate logical sections, each of which can hold a different file system or operating system. They can create, resize, move and delete partitions, often without losing the data already stored. Cloning and imaging utilities copy an entire drive or partition, either to another drive or into a single image file, which is used for backups and for transferring a system to a new disk. These tools are frequently run from bootable media so that the drive being copied is not in use.
For maintenance, SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) tools read the diagnostic data that modern drives keep about themselves, such as reallocated sectors and error counts, giving early warning of a drive that may be failing. Data-recovery programs attempt to retrieve files that have been deleted or lost from a damaged or formatted drive, while secure-erase tools overwrite data so it cannot be recovered before a drive is disposed of. Defragmentation tools reorganise files on traditional hard disks for faster access, though this is unnecessary for SSDs. Many of these utilities are available as freeware.
Frequently asked questions
- What is disk partitioning?
- It divides a drive into separate logical sections that can each hold a different file system or operating system, and tools can resize them without losing data.
- What does SMART monitoring tell me?
- It reads a drive's self-diagnostic data, such as error counts and reallocated sectors, giving early warning that a disk may be starting to fail.
- Can deleted files be recovered?
- Often yes, if the data has not yet been overwritten. Recovery tools scan the drive for traces of deleted files, though success is not guaranteed.

Crystaldiskinfo
CrystalDiskInfo is a HDD/SSD utility software which supports S.M.A.R.T. |
|
DiskCheckup
allows the user to monitor the SMART attributes of a particular hard disk drive.
SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a feature on a
computer's hard disk for providing various monitoring indicators of disk
reliability. If SMART is enabled on a hard disk, the system administrator can
receive analytical information from the hard drive to determine a possible
future failure of the hard drive |

distribution of used space inside them. Each directory may contain hundreds of
subdirectories each containing many files, zip file |

| Ram disk:
cenatek emulates as fully as possible the low-level functionality of a hard disk with system RAM. RAMDisk speeds up applications because RAM is much faster
than mechanical hard disks for storing and retrieving data. Applications that do a lot of reading and writing to storage, like database queries, will show the
most improvement with RAMDisk |

SequoiaView
Ever wondered why your hard disk is full? Or what directory is taking up most of
the space? When using conventional disk browsing tools, such as Windows
Explorer, these questions may be hard to answer. With SequoiaView however, they
can be answered almost immediately. SequoiaView uses a visualization technique
called cushion treemaps to provide you with a single picture of the entire
contents of your hard drive |
