Animal Biodiversity
Biodiversity describes the variety of living things in a given area or across the planet, and the animal kingdom represents an immense part of that variety. From microscopic plankton drifting in the oceans to large mammals roaming the savanna, animals occupy nearly every habitat and fill countless ecological roles. Biodiversity is usually considered at several levels: the range of species present, the genetic variation within those species, and the diversity of ecosystems they form. Healthy, diverse ecosystems tend to be more stable and resilient to disturbance.
Scientists organise this variety through classification, sorting animals into groups such as marsupials, carnivores, primates, hooved animals, birds, reptiles like turtles, crocodiles, lizards and snakes, amphibians, fish, and the many invertebrates including arthropods. Each group occupies particular niches, and together they form food webs in which energy passes from plants to herbivores to predators and decomposers. Small organisms such as plankton and insects, though easily overlooked, underpin many of these webs.
Much animal biodiversity is now under threat. Habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation and climate change have pushed many species toward extinction, and conservation has become a central concern of biology. Zoological gardens and aquariums contribute through breeding programmes, public education and research, while protected reserves safeguard habitats. Cataloguing and monitoring endangered species helps direct conservation effort where it is most needed.
Frequently asked questions
- What is biodiversity?
- Biodiversity is the variety of life, measured by the range of species, the genetic variation within them, and the diversity of ecosystems they form.
- Why does animal biodiversity matter?
- Diverse ecosystems are generally more stable and productive. Animals support food webs, pollination, nutrient cycling and other processes that ecosystems depend on.
- What role do zoos play in conservation?
- Zoological gardens and aquariums support captive breeding of endangered species, conduct research, and educate the public about wildlife and habitat protection.
