Engineering and Mechanics Calculators

Engineering and mechanics calculators are tools that evaluate the formulas of applied physics and machine design, turning a few measured inputs into a quantity an engineer needs to size or check a component. They cover the branches of mechanical engineering that deal with forces, motion, fluids and heat, and they reduce repetitive hand calculation while making unit conversions explicit.

A spring force calculator applies Hooke's law, in which the force exerted by an ideal spring is proportional to its displacement, with the spring rate as the constant of proportionality; designers use it to match a spring to a required load and deflection. Hydraulic calculators rest on Pascal's principle, which states that pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally throughout it, allowing a small input force on a small piston to produce a large output force on a larger one. Related fluid-power tools compute cylinder thrust, flow rate and the displacement of devices such as gear pumps.

Pressure and stress calculators convert between force and area: pressure is force per unit area in a fluid, while mechanical stress is the internal force per unit area within a loaded solid, distinguished as tensile, compressive or shear. Heat-transfer calculators handle conduction, convection and radiation, and rotating-equipment tools relate torque, rotational speed and power for shafts, gears and pumps. Because these relationships are governed by fixed physical laws, the calculators are mainly aids to speed and accuracy rather than sources of new theory.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pressure and stress?
Both are force divided by area, but pressure usually refers to a force distributed over a surface by a fluid, while stress is the internal force per unit area carried within a solid material under load.
How does a spring force calculator work?
It uses Hooke's law: force equals the spring constant multiplied by the distance the spring is compressed or stretched, so entering the spring rate and deflection returns the force.
Why are hydraulic systems able to multiply force?
By Pascal's principle, pressure is uniform throughout a confined fluid, so applying force to a small piston produces a larger force on a bigger piston in proportion to their areas.
