Statistics Calculators
Statistics calculators evaluate the formulas of probability and data analysis, returning quantities such as probabilities, percentiles and summary measures that would otherwise require lookup tables or lengthy computation. They are widely used in teaching and applied work because many statistical procedures reduce to plugging measured values into a known distribution.
The normal distribution, often shown as an interactive bell curve, describes many continuous quantities that cluster symmetrically around a mean. A normal-curve calculator returns the area under the curve between chosen values, which corresponds to the probability that an observation falls in that range; the standard normal version uses a mean of zero and a standard deviation of one. Because of the central limit theorem, sums and averages of many independent influences tend toward this shape, which is why the normal model appears so often.
Discrete-distribution calculators handle counts rather than continuous values. The binomial distribution gives the probability of a certain number of successes in a fixed number of independent trials, each with the same success probability. The Poisson distribution models the number of events occurring in a fixed interval of time or space when events happen at a constant average rate independently of one another, and it approximates the binomial when trials are many and individual success is rare. The exponential distribution describes the waiting time between such Poisson events. Together these tools let students explore how parameters change a distribution's shape and how probabilities are read from it.
