Physics Calculators

Physics calculators are tools that compute the quantities appearing in fundamental physical laws, letting a known set of variables be rearranged to find an unknown one. They span mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism and other areas, and they are valued in teaching because they make the structure of an equation visible while removing arithmetic errors.

A common group handles the behaviour of gases through the ideal gas law, which relates pressure, volume, the amount of substance in moles and absolute temperature by a single equation involving the universal gas constant. Holding some of these fixed reproduces the historical gas laws: at constant temperature, pressure and volume vary inversely; at constant pressure, volume rises with temperature. Such calculators require temperature in kelvin, the absolute scale whose zero point is the coldest possible temperature, because the relationships break down if a relative scale is used.
