Chemical nomenclature
Chemical nomenclature is the system of rules used to name chemical substances. Because millions of compounds exist, a consistent naming scheme is needed so that a name communicates a compound's composition unambiguously to chemists anywhere. Much of the modern system is maintained by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), which sets out conventions for naming elements, ions, and both inorganic and organic compounds.
For simple inorganic compounds, names are built from the constituent elements and their proportions. An ionic compound is usually named by giving the positive ion first and the negative ion second, as in sodium chloride. Where an element can take more than one charge, oxidation states are indicated, for example by Roman numerals, to distinguish related compounds. Acids, oxides and salts follow their own naming patterns. Organic nomenclature is more elaborate: a name typically encodes the length of the main carbon chain, the type of bonds present, and the functional groups attached, so that the structure can in principle be reconstructed from the name alone.
Alongside systematic names, chemistry uses many abbreviations, acronyms and traditional names. Common substances often keep historical names — water and ammonia rather than their systematic equivalents — and laboratory shorthand abbreviates reagents and techniques. Learning nomenclature means becoming fluent in both the formal rules and this everyday vocabulary, which together let chemists read formulas, follow reactions and communicate without confusion.
