The Immune System

The immune system is the body’s defence network against disease-causing agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and harmful toxins. It distinguishes the body’s own cells from foreign material and acts to neutralise or destroy threats. Defence operates on two broad levels: an innate response that reacts quickly and generally to any intruder, and an adaptive response that targets specific pathogens and remembers them for the future.

Innate defences include physical barriers like the skin, as well as inflammation and specialised white blood cells that engulf microbes. The adaptive system relies on lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. Some lymphocytes produce antibodies, proteins that lock onto specific markers on a pathogen and mark it for destruction, while others directly attack infected cells. Once the body has encountered a particular microbe, it can respond faster and more strongly the next time, which is the basis of immunity and of how vaccines work.

The lymphatic system supports immune function by circulating a fluid called lymph and housing many immune cells. Lymph nodes act as filtering stations where pathogens are trapped and immune responses are coordinated, and they often swell during infection. Other lymphatic organs and tissues, including the tonsils, spleen, thymus, and the appendix, contribute to producing, storing, or activating immune cells. Together these structures allow the body to detect infection, mount a response, and recover.
