Power control circuits

Power control circuits govern how much electrical energy is delivered to a load and under what conditions. Rather than simply switching a device fully on or off, these circuits often adjust voltage, current or the average power supplied so that motors, lamps, heaters and other devices operate as intended. The field spans everything from a simple lamp dimmer to a regulated power supply that holds its output steady despite changes in load or input voltage.

A common theme is converting and regulating electrical energy. Power supplies transform an available source — mains electricity or a battery — into the stable voltage a circuit needs, often rectifying alternating current and smoothing it with capacitors before regulation. Motor-control circuits vary the speed or torque of electric motors, and dimmers control the brightness of lamps, frequently by switching the supply rapidly and varying the proportion of time it is on. Battery chargers and current sources are also part of this group, managing the flow of energy into storage cells.

Many modern power circuits rely on switching techniques, in which transistors turn the supply on and off at high speed and the average is controlled by adjusting the on-time. This approach is efficient because the switching devices spend little time in states that waste power. Designers must also address heat dissipation, protection against overcurrent and short circuits, and electrical noise.
