Optoelectronic circuits

Optoelectronic circuits combine light and electronics, using components that either produce light from an electrical signal or generate an electrical signal from light. The field rests on semiconductor devices such as light-emitting diodes, which emit light when current flows through them, and photodiodes and phototransistors, which respond to light falling on them. By pairing emitters and detectors, a circuit can convert signals between electrical and optical form, opening up applications that purely electrical circuits cannot easily achieve.

A central idea in optoelectronics is using light to carry a signal between parts that are not electrically connected. An optocoupler, for instance, places an LED and a light sensor in one package so that a signal passes across as light, keeping the two sides electrically isolated. This isolation protects sensitive circuitry and breaks unwanted electrical paths. Other optoelectronic circuits sense ambient light to switch devices automatically, detect when an object interrupts a beam, or measure light intensity for instrumentation and control.

The same components underlie a broad range of designs, from simple light-activated switches and indicators to optical communication links and displays. Practical considerations include matching the wavelength of the emitter to the sensitivity of the detector, providing the correct drive current for emitters, and amplifying the often small signals produced by detectors.
