Light Sensor Circuits

A light sensor circuit detects the presence or intensity of light and converts it into an electrical signal. The sensing element is an optical transducer such as a light-dependent resistor (LDR), a photodiode or a phototransistor. An LDR, often made from cadmium sulfide (CdS), has a resistance that falls sharply as illumination increases. A photodiode produces a small current proportional to the light striking it, while a phototransistor combines light detection with built-in amplification.

In a common arrangement the light sensor forms part of a voltage divider: as the light changes, the voltage at the junction of the sensor and a fixed resistor rises or falls. This voltage can be fed to a comparator or operational amplifier so that the circuit produces a clean switching action at a chosen light level. Such circuits are used in automatic street and garden lighting that turns on at dusk, in nightlights, and in cameras and exposure meters that measure brightness.

Photodiodes and phototransistors respond much faster than an LDR and are preferred where speed matters, for example in optical data links, beam-break detectors and pulse counting. Where actual light intensity must be measured rather than simply detected, the sensor output is amplified and read by a meter or an analogue-to-digital converter, and the circuit must be calibrated and shielded from stray ambient light to give reliable readings.
