Weather Sensor Circuits

Weather sensor circuits measure the atmospheric quantities that make up local weather and turn them into electrical signals for display, logging or alarms. A complete electronic weather station combines several sensors: a thermometer for air temperature, a hygrometer for relative humidity, a barometer for air pressure, an anemometer for wind speed, a vane for wind direction, and a gauge for rainfall. Each sensor feeds a conditioning circuit that amplifies and calibrates its output.

Temperature is usually sensed with a thermistor or an integrated temperature sensor, while humidity is measured with a capacitive or resistive element whose properties change with moisture. Air pressure is read by a barometric pressure sensor, often a piezoresistive device whose resistance varies as a diaphragm flexes under pressure; tracking pressure changes helps to forecast approaching weather. Wind speed is commonly measured by counting pulses from a rotating cup anemometer, and rainfall by counting the tips of a small see-saw bucket.

A lightning detector is a related circuit that senses the burst of radio-frequency energy produced by a distant electrical discharge, giving warning of approaching storms. In modern stations the conditioned analogue signals are digitised and read by a microcontroller, which can store readings, drive a display, and transmit data wirelessly to an indoor unit. Reliable results depend on good sensor placement, shielding from direct sun, and careful calibration.
