RF circuits

RF circuits, or radio-frequency circuits, operate at the high frequencies used for wireless communication, generally well above the audio range. At these frequencies signals can be radiated from an antenna as electromagnetic waves and received some distance away, which is the basis of all radio, including broadcasting, two-way communication and remote control. Working at radio frequencies brings particular challenges, since wiring, component layout and small stray effects influence behavior much more than they do in low-frequency circuits.

A radio link is built from a few characteristic stages. An oscillator generates a steady carrier wave at the desired frequency; crystal oscillators are often used where accuracy matters. The information to be sent, such as audio, is combined with the carrier by modulation — amplitude modulation (AM) varies the carrier's strength in step with the signal. A transmitter amplifies the modulated carrier and feeds it to an antenna. At the receiving end, a receiver selects the wanted frequency, and a mixer shifts it to a more convenient frequency for amplification before the original information is recovered.

RF circuits include AM oscillators and transmitters, receivers, mixers, crystal oscillators and the measurement gear used to test them. Because performance depends on resonance and careful tuning, coils and capacitors are chosen to select and pass specific frequency bands. Designers also attend to shielding, impedance matching and stability to keep signals clean and prevent unwanted oscillation. Collections of RF circuits provide practical transmitter, receiver and oscillator designs that illustrate how information is carried over the air.

Frequently asked questions

What are RF circuits?
Circuits that operate at radio frequencies so signals can be radiated from an antenna and received at a distance for wireless communication.
What is amplitude modulation?
A method of carrying information by varying the strength of a radio carrier in step with the signal being sent.
Why is layout so important in RF design?
At high frequencies, wiring, component placement and small stray effects strongly influence behavior, so careful layout and tuning are essential.
