Light Dimmer Circuits

A light dimmer is a circuit that varies the brightness of a lamp by controlling the electrical power delivered to it. The crude approach of placing a resistor in series wastes energy as heat and is impractical for anything but small loads. Modern mains dimmers instead use phase control, a switching technique that adjusts power without significant losses by rapidly turning the current on and off within each cycle of the alternating-current supply.

In a typical phase-control dimmer the key component is a triac, a semiconductor switch that can conduct in both directions and so suits the alternating mains waveform. During each half-cycle the triac stays off until it is triggered, after which it conducts for the remainder of that half-cycle. A small trigger circuit built around a diac and an RC timing network sets the delay before triggering; turning the control knob changes the resistance and hence the firing point. The later in the cycle the triac fires, the smaller the fraction of the waveform reaching the lamp and the dimmer it appears.

Because this method chops the waveform sharply, it can generate electrical noise and may not suit every load. Incandescent and many halogen lamps dim smoothly because their brightness depends on the average power, but electronic loads such as some LED and compact fluorescent lamps need dimmers specifically designed for them. Practical designs add a filter to suppress interference and protective components to handle the switching stresses. The same phase-control principle is used more widely for power control in heaters, motor speed controllers and similar applications.
