Crystal Radio Circuits

A crystal radio is one of the simplest forms of radio receiver, able to pick up amplitude-modulated (AM) broadcast stations without any battery or external power source. It draws all of the energy it needs to drive an earphone directly from the radio waves captured by its antenna. The name comes from the early use of a crystal of mineral such as galena, probed with a fine wire — a so-called cat’s-whisker — which acted as a primitive point-contact detector. In modern versions this is replaced by a germanium diode.

A basic circuit has four parts: a long wire antenna, a good earth connection, a tuned circuit, and a detector feeding a high-impedance earphone. The tuned circuit is a coil and a variable capacitor connected to form a resonant LC circuit; adjusting the capacitor changes the resonant frequency so that one station can be selected from the many present on the antenna. The selected radio-frequency signal is then passed to the detector.

The detector’s job is to demodulate the AM signal, recovering the audio that was impressed on the carrier wave. The diode rectifies the high-frequency signal, and a small capacitor smooths the result so that the slower audio variations remain. Because there is no amplification, the recovered sound is faint and a sensitive earphone is required. Performance depends heavily on a long, high antenna and a low-resistance ground, and on the receiver being located reasonably close to a transmitter.
