Fluid Level Control Circuits

Fluid level control circuits sense the height of a liquid in a tank or container and use that information to switch equipment such as pumps, valves or alarms. They are widely used in domestic water systems, industrial processing, sump and bilge pumping, and aquariums, wherever a liquid must be kept between a minimum and maximum level automatically. The output of such a circuit typically drives a relay or transistor that turns a pump on when the level falls and off when it has been refilled.

The simplest sensing method exploits the electrical conductivity of water. Two or more probes are placed at fixed heights; when the liquid rises to touch a probe, a small current flows between the probes, and a transistor or comparator detects this change. Because a continuous direct current through water causes electrolysis and corrosion of the probes, many designs sense with alternating current or with very low currents. Other approaches use a float that rises and falls with the surface, operating a magnetic reed switch, or non-contact methods using capacitance, pressure or ultrasonic ranging.

A typical control circuit adds hysteresis so that the pump does not switch rapidly on and off as the surface ripples around a single threshold. This is done with two separate probes or set points, one defining the low level and one the high level, often arranged as a latching circuit. A water-level alarm is a related variant that simply sounds a buzzer or lights an indicator when liquid reaches an unwanted point, such as a flood detector on a floor.

How does a conductive level sensor work?
Probes are placed at set heights, and the circuit detects the small current that flows through the liquid when it rises to bridge two probes. That change in conductivity switches the output.
Why use alternating current for the probes?
A steady direct current through water causes electrolysis, which corrodes the probes and produces gas bubbles. Alternating or pulsed sensing reduces this and prolongs probe life.
What stops the pump cycling on and off rapidly?
The circuit uses two levels or a latch to add hysteresis: the pump starts at a low level and runs until a higher level is reached, rather than reacting to small ripples at one point.
