Digital circuits

A digital circuit processes information represented by a small number of discrete levels, most commonly two: a high voltage and a low voltage standing for the binary values one and zero. Because each signal is interpreted as one of these defined states rather than a continuously varying quantity, digital circuits are relatively immune to small amounts of noise and are well suited to counting, timing, logic and the storage of data. This makes them the foundation of computers and most modern electronic equipment.

The basic building blocks of digital electronics are logic gates, which produce an output that depends on the combination of their inputs according to rules such as AND, OR and NOT. By connecting gates together, designers create more complex functions: circuits that add numbers, store bits, count events or sequence operations. Timing elements are also central. Oscillators generate the regular clock pulses that pace a system, and timer circuits produce delays or pulses of a chosen length, for example a switch that stays active for an adjustable interval.

Digital circuits are built from logic families such as CMOS and TTL, available as integrated circuits, or implemented inside microcontrollers and programmable logic devices. Designers work with concepts like logic levels, propagation delay, clocking and the difference between combinational logic, whose output depends only on present inputs, and sequential logic, which also depends on stored state. Collections of digital circuits include counters, timers, oscillators and simple logic projects that demonstrate how binary signals combine to perform useful tasks.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a circuit digital?
It represents information using a few discrete levels, usually two standing for binary one and zero, rather than continuously varying values.
What are logic gates?
Basic building blocks that produce an output based on their inputs following rules such as AND, OR and NOT.
What role do oscillators and timers play?
Oscillators generate the clock pulses that pace a system, while timers produce delays or pulses of a chosen duration.
