Solar Power Circuits

Solar power circuits generate, control and use electricity produced from sunlight by photovoltaic cells. A solar cell is a semiconductor device that converts light directly into a direct-current voltage through the photovoltaic effect; cells are wired together into panels to provide useful power. Because the output of a panel varies with sunlight and temperature, supporting circuits are needed to make this energy usable for charging batteries, running equipment, or feeding power into a load.

A central part of most small solar systems is a charge controller, which regulates the current flowing from the panel into a rechargeable battery. It prevents overcharging, which would damage the battery, and many designs prevent the battery from discharging back through the panel at night. More advanced controllers use maximum power point tracking, adjusting the operating point of the panel so it delivers as much power as possible under the current conditions. DC-DC converters then step the battery voltage up or down to whatever a particular load requires.

Solar power also overlaps with optoelectronic and optical circuits, where light and electronic signals interact. Light-sensing elements can switch lamps on at dusk and off at dawn, and photodiodes and phototransistors detect optical signals. Practical solar circuits also include simple light dimmers and indicators, and they share design concerns such as protecting against reverse current, matching the panel to the load, and accounting for the variability of natural light.
